A serious violation of human rights

Abstract

The main purpose of this text is to identify the main causes and consequences of domestic violence, a complex phenomenon considered a serious violation of human rights. Violence against women is directly linked to the issue of gender, permeating discussions involving power relations and structural inequalities responsible for the construction of roles that have naturalized the positions of men and women over the centuries. Gender equality is one of the objectives to be achieved, according to the UN’s 2030 agenda, which Brazil has adopted. In order to provide a more concrete overview and help find alternatives to such a serious situation, specialized literature will be used, but mainly empirical research with emphasis on the national and international scenario related to domestic violence. The conclusion, after analyzing the data, is that there are multiple causes and consequences that manifest themselves in an integrated manner, with significant costs for the State, society and the family, however, the main cost is still paid by the victim herself.
